JKJ's 'Three Men in a Boat'

Behind 'Three Men in a Boat', I had only two simple reasons :

  1. In the school, I had read, and liked, either a poem or a chapter I don't recall authored by Jerome K. Jerome
  2. I have a predilection for Nature stories, idyllic plots, bland travelogues etc. I read the plot summary of the book and felt it would suit my taste !

Firstly, the book is quite ordinary and prosaic in Nature and that is what brings it close to a 'common man'. People often LIKE what they can relate to their life - mundane events, mishaps, lethargy, philosophy, superstitions, lies, realizations and so on. While reading the book, I had several laughs and felt like hitting the LIKE button on Facebook !

On almost every page, there is a new window into the mindset of the humans; how they react to different situations differently/samely. While we all(ok, some of us at least)know this consciously/subconsciously, reading the same in form of humorous book helps to reflect upon ourselves better.

The book is specially meant for grown-up(physical age implied here)MEN - their habits, thoughts, sentiments, how they put up with other men. There are aplenty of depictions, all truthful and seamless. The book does get touchy and sentimental at times but those too do NOT give creeps as the other mushy works are good at !

While the book is more than a century old, in today's turbulent times, it holds a high relevance ! Though based on 3 real friends, this book personifies(may be an early and less unfortunate version) we - the 'modern' individuals. How we go crazy when we are left idle from our menial jobs and a 'fast' schedule, how we find difficult when the resources are scarce and we are forced to do things for each other and tolerating each-other's habits closely. How we, in the flow of our daily life, fail to realize how much extravaganza haunts our lives!

Last but not the least, the book highlights THE ETERNAL truth - Nature is the best lover and teacher !

I admit that it is a tedious task, also something that would bring injustice to the book, to re-produce the humour punches which are scattered over the entire book - one has to read to enjoy them !
